The New Orleans Saints complemented their attack last year and the defensive system is no longer Swiss cheese that was between 2014 and 2016. But in a team led by Sean Payton, the motto is always “the best defense is the attack.”
This year, as usual in the Payton era, this will be no different.

The Saints come from a 2017 revival season. After three consecutive years with seven wins and nine losses, with the fastest playoff rating, since Drew Brees and Payton landed in Louisiana in 2006, the team once again enchanted their fans.
The explosive attack, which has always been a hallmark of the organization in the last decade, is still there, and last year the Saints fans were positively surprised by their defense. I, as a Who Dat supporter, put myself in this group.
For comparison purposes, New Orleans had the NFL’s second-worst defense in points conceded in 2016 and the sixth worst in conceded yards. Already last year, in the second season of Dennis Allen as the team’s defensive coordinator, the Saints had the tenth best defense in conceded points (with only 20.4 points conceded per game) and 17th in the league in yards (336.5 per match).
The brutal difference, is not it? And this is even more significant if we take into account that the attack remained round as usual.
Since 2011, the Saints’ attack has not left the top 10 of the league’s best in both scored and earned points. Last year, quarterback Drew Brees was fourth in points (28 per game) and second-best in yards (391.2 per game)
Taking all that into account, it is not difficult to understand why the Saints’ season depends heavily on whether the defense is not bad. The attack plays its part, as a rule.
This will continue. And the team will still be able to develop Brees’ possible future heir, acquired in a recent exchange with the New York Jets (you must know who it is, but I have learned from master John Kleber that he does not give himself all by hand).
What makes me smile
Impossible not to use almost all this topic to talk about the attack. Ah, how he fills his eyes.
Starting with Brees. Even at age 39, the signal caller shows no sign of fatigue and remains one of the best QBs in the entire National Football League. A future Hall of Famer, in short.
Last year, Brees threw for 4,334 yards and 23 touchdowns, down from the 2016 numbers (5,208 yards and 37 touchdowns), but that was by no means a decline of the athlete. Quite the opposite. It was no more than a reflection of the good ground game the team had last season, with Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara forming an extremely powerful duo coming out of the backfield.
This was also reflected in Brees’ pass percentage (impressive 72% in 2017 compared to 70% in 2016) and in interceptions suffered (eight last year compared to 15 the previous year).
Speaking in Kamara, the running back comes from a brilliant freshman season as he has run 120 times for 728 yards and eight touchdowns, and has won 81 passes for 826 yards and five touchdowns. That earned him the offensive freshman award of the year.
The Saints’ attack also has great weapons in the wide receivers group. Michael Thomas is once again the main receiver of Brees and he comes from a spectacular season with 104 receptions for 1,245 yards and five touchdowns.
The team still owns Ted Ginn Jr., a good wide receiver number 2 and important player in the return game.
Oh, and we can not forget tight end Benjamin Watson, who returns to the team where he played between 2013 and 2015 and must be a major addition to the attack, although at 37 he is no longer the player of the past.
The Saints have recently acquired quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in a daring exchange with the Jets and that will be another aspect to keep an eye on, since he may be Brees’ replacement in the future if he fits in and proves once and for all that he has recovered from severe knee injury that suffered in 2016.
It is also necessary to mention the defense, which is not remembered when we speak of the best in the league, but it is a unit in rapid evolution.
The improved defense of last year was another of the main reasons why Brees did not have to throw balls so often, something that was common when the team yielded a truck of points and yards, having thus to always run after the result.
The secondary has big names like cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who emerged as one of the big names in his first year in the NFL and has scored five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and 18 misdirected passes.
Other good names in high school are safety-cornerback Ken Crawley and safety Marcus Williams, who may have missed the famous tackle in Stefon Diggs in last year’s playoff division but is a youngster promising.
Front seven also promises to terrorize opponents’ attacks, with exceptional Cameron Jordan at one end of the offensive line and Alex Okafor in the other. Not to mention the freshman Marcus Davenport, selected by the Saints in the first round of the 2018 draft and promising to be a great rusher pass.
In the linebackers’ body, newcomer Demario Davis is the middle leader, with Alex Anzalone and AJ Klein being the top names among outside linebackers.
What makes me cry
The inside of the offensive line is no good and can cause problems. The center Max Unger is a good name of the position, but had a complicated year in 2017, due mainly to a foot injury. In the left guard position, Andrus Peat still has not shown much of what came in the NFL.
The Saints have lost seasoned tackle Zach Strief to retirement in this offseason, but they still have big blockers at the top end, such as Ryan Ramczyk and Terron Armstead, who are expected to be the two biggest names in OL.
Special teams also tend to be a fragile spot in the Louisiana franchise, especially in blocks and tackles, but the New Orleans Saints have a consistent kicker in Wil Lutz and a fine punter in Thomas Morstead.
Production, what was that?
Mark Ingram has taken a four-game suspension and will miss the team’s attack on the starting lineup of the championship. The star has taken the punishment because of a violation of the NFL’s banned substance policy.
Ingram got stuck, but the Saints’ luck is that they have Kamara and an easy table early in the season to make things better.
Why I predicted 12 wins for the New Orleans Saints
The set of a favorable table in large part of the championship and an exceptional/explosive / all good attack, besides a defense in clear ascension, makes New Orleans one of the teams to be feared in 2018.
In the opening game of the championship, games against Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, both at home, Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants, and Washington Redskins, at home, promise to give Sean Payton’s team a great start.
Then, just continue to take advantage of the strong field command in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the recent fame of indigestible visitor to finish with 11 or 12 victories.
In my view, the playoff berth is more than guaranteed. Just no major injury will disrupt the plans.
