Acquisition of Cousins and maintenance of the defensive unit are components for the Vikings to reach SB.
The 2017 season marked one of the best campaigns in the recent history of the Minnesota Vikings. Against all odds, Sam Bradford and backup Case Keenum led the team in 13 wins and three losses, leading Minnesota to the NFC conference final. They have been to a match to be the first to play a Super Bowl in their dominions, however, the taboo remains for the 2018 season.
Now the Vikings want to lift higher flights. With good depth in almost every position of the cast, the franchise sought in the free agency reinforcements punctual to strengthen the cast and surpass the good campaign of the past season. To fulfill the mission, Minnesota did not hesitate to pay $ 84 million, over three seasons, to quarterback Kirk Cousins, in addition to securing DT Sheldon Richardson, former Seattle Seahawks.

The most heartfelt casualty was on the field. Offensive coordinator Pat Shumur left the team by signing with the New York Giants and the replacement was named after John DeFilippo, a former QB coach for the Eagles. Within the four rows, the team smashed Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater, as well as losing retired OG Joe Berger, RB Jerick McKinnon, and defensive tackles Shariff Floyd and Tom Johnson.
If the franchise was able to hold on to the great defense of last season, the Vikes attack will look quite different for 2018. Dalvin Cook, who has lost almost the entire league debut season, is back and will take on all of the backfield’s leading roles. The line between quarterback and offensive coordinator will be a challenge for the new system to work as well as last year, however, the team has plenty of talent to produce over a thousand yards with each of its wide receivers: Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.
Attack wins games, defenses win championships. That phrase has already exemplified many winning team campaigns in the NFL, however, that was not the case with the Vikings last year despite arguably the league’s best defense. The unit was the least awarded points to the opponents and less allowed total yards to their opponents. The secondary was one of the best against the pass, the best defense against the land game and the best fifth in yards per load. The Vikes aim to further improve those numbers, evidenced by Mike Hughes’ first-round draft pick by cornerback Mike Hughes.
With the maintenance of his great talents on both sides of the ball and punctual reinforcements, the Minnesota Vikings stand as one of the great favorites to win the next Super Bowl.
Major Arrivals: Kirk Cousins and Trevor Siemian arrive to fill the absence of the three quarterbacks dispensed by the Vikings and compose a renewed attack and commanded by the new offensive coordinator John De Felippo. The acquisition of DT Sheldon Richardson will fill the gap on the defensive line left by Sharrif Floyd and Tom Johnson. The defensive unit gains the safety enhancement George Iloka, who will add to the talented Harrison Smith and Andrew Sendejo. And the novelty in the team of experts goes by the name of Daniel Carlson since kicker Kai Forbath was dismissed after numerous field goals lost in previous seasons.
Main Exits: Jerick McKinnon, a great valve of escape in the game corridor, landed in San Francisco and makes space in the backfield. In the offensive line, guard Joe Berger has announced his retirement and is expected to make way for Tom Compton, while Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum, and Sam Bradford will have separate roles in New Orleans, Denver, and Arizona, respectively.
Stronger point: The Vikings have one of the most aggressive defenses in the NFL. This way the team was defeated only three times last season and should reproduce the same intensity. George Iloka and Mike Hughes are expected to further improve the team’s numbers and Everson Griffen hopes to repeat the 13 sacks recorded last season.
Weakest point: With optimum depth in all cast positions, the troubling spot should be on the team of specialists. Kai Forbath kicker has been cut and freshman Daniel Carlson should not have an easy life. Chosen in the fifth round of the last draft, the Auburn product missed two pre-season field goals and Mike Zimmer’s decision to set him as the starter no longer seems so secure. Tuning between Kirk Cousins and their wide receivers can be a challenge as a quarterback and offensive coordinator have little time to develop chemistry with their recipients.
Keep an eye out: The transition from college to the professional is never easy. But this does not seem to be the case with CB Mike Hughes. Selected in the first round and one of the greatest talents of their position in the last Draft, Hughes made a great pre-season and played his great performances from UCF times. The defender must evolve too closely with Xavier Rhodes.
